A significant portion of our clients who are independent owner-operators and small fleets use the ELD service from KeepTruckin. To assist drivers in navigating the additional alternatives available while adhering to the federal hours of service requirements, several ELD providers released multiple software upgrades, with more expected to follow. Some of them are still having trouble figuring out how to implement the new split sleeper options under the new regulations, which went into effect on September 29, 2020. The KeepTruckin split sleeper operates as shown below.

When selecting the split sleeper option, drivers may flip a toggle that shows them their available hours in KeepTruckin’s new split sleeper experience. Drivers will be able to see how many driving and on-duty hours they still have before finishing both qualifying periods with this tool.

How does the Split sleeper work:

  1. In order to start using this new experience, make sure you have downloaded the latest version of the KeepTruckin Driver App.

2. Open the KeepTruckin Driver App and navigate to the Logs screen

3. Swipe left on the main Logs screen, to view the HOS Recap

4. To view the hours available for you, you should’ve availed of a qualifying split sleeper berth period (i.e. 2 hours off-duty/sleeper berth).  To do so, click on the Show Split SB Clocks toggle button (iOS) or check the Show Split SB Clocks checkbox (Android) at the bottom of the HOS Recap screen.

5. Once you’ve checked the checkbox, you will be able to view your available driving and on-duty hours with the time from the first qualifying period added back.

6. Your Split SB clocks will also be shown on the driving lock screen. Drivers must choose Show Split SB Clocks or Show Default Clocks in order to switch between the clocks while in driving lock mode.

NOTE ** Drivers will still be needed to finish their split sleeper berth in order to prevent HOS violations. However, the driver’s clocks will reset after they have finished their second period. All previously created violations are appropriately erased.
Always use the DOT Inspection Mode during an inspection, in order to avoid violations
